Yifeng Wei is a writer, curator, and PhD researcher whose work explores the aesthetics of opacity as a way to question identity politics, technological governance, and the historical connections between science, technology, and colonialism. His research is informed by thinkers including Édouard Glissant, Michel Serres, and Gayatri Spivak, and considers how transparency has been used as a tool of control, from colonial photography to facial recognition systems. He is particularly interested in how invisibility, rather than signifying weakness, can be reclaimed as a form of resistance.
His practice combines curating and critical writing. He was shortlisted for the Hyundai Blue Prize in both 2025 and 2023 for curatorial projects that explored opacity as a strategy for disrupting dominant narratives within knowledge production and identity politics. These projects engaged with artistic approaches to ambiguity, refusal, and obfuscation as means of resisting fixed categorisation. His forthcoming book chapter, Scaling the Planet: Towards a Planetary Vision, challenges the limits of cultural identity by proposing a more plural, planetary perspective. His essay Do Not Open That Trojan Horse explores how encrypted technologies and black-box models in artificial intelligence can be used imaginatively and critically.
